How & Why to Fuzz Transfers from Chalk Couture

You’ve probably heard you need to fuzz Chalk Couture Transfers. But what the heck does that even mean?! It definitely sound like a strange thing to say when we are talking about crafting. Let’s explore how to fuzz transfers and why exactly you should.

Fuzzing Transfers

Why fuzz?

One of the things that sets the Chalk Couture silk screen transfers apart is the strong adhesive backing. It’s what allows you to consistently get crisp lines, great detail and multiple uses. This stickiness diminishes over time, but your transfers are good for 8-12 uses if properly cared for. That said, if the transfer sticks to the surface too well, when you pull it up after chalking you will either stretch or rip the transfer, or pull up part of the surface, as well. The goal of fuzzing is to actually make the transfer less sticky to help preserve the integrity of the design. The only time you shouldn’t fuzz a transfer is when you are putting your design on fabric items- like shirts, canvas bags, hats, or pillowcases.

How to Fuzz Transfers

how to fuzz transfers, why fuzz transfers, what is fuzzing

It’s really quite simple. Peel the paper backing off of the transfer and press it, sticky side down, into a terry cloth towel or even your shirt. Repeat this process 3-4 times before placing on your board.

Now that I’ve been with Chalk Couture for a bit longer, I actually use their Fuzzing Cloth. They’re just the right size for most of our transfers and the microfiber side of the cloth is perfect for drying the transfers after washing. It’s also nice to have a dedicated towel just for my chalk supplies instead of having to run to the bathroom or kitchen every time I want to create.

That’s it! Fuzzing is a simple process that will help you extend the life of your transfers– I’ve heard of some designers getting up to 20 uses out of their transfers!
